I'm wondering how much can be said about the symmetry of the design based on the symmetry of the clues. I know a five-by-five grid with one black in each row and column has a solution with no symmetry at all, even though the clues are as symmetrical as you can get. It does have solutions with diagonal lines of symmetry too though.#2: Philip Snyder (Alex72) on Apr 2, 2004
Given that the clues are symmetric, how asymmetric could the solution be?#3: Mark Conger (aruba) on Apr 5, 2004
A lot of symmetry, but still a lot of work! Very nice!#4: theo van emmen (theo) on Dec 22, 2004
If a certain reflection of the puzzle board leaves the clues unchanged, then that reflection applied to any solution will produce another solution. So it follows that if there is a unique solution, it must be unchanged by the reflection. (I.e., it's symmetric.)
too symmetric for me, but a good puzzle#5: Gypso (Gypso) on Oct 9, 2007
Cute design Jan. Thanks.#6: Scylla Kat (scyllacat) on Feb 21, 2008
I got the joke! Is a Knot! Yes, I'm easily amused, and partially inspired!#7: Gypso (Gypso) on Feb 21, 2008
Go! Scylla GO! You can do it. ;-)#8: Scott C (estray98) on Sep 18, 2008
one word, AWESOME, I LOVED IT. THX#9: Adam Nielson (monkeyboy) on May 12, 2009
That looks like more than one word to me, Scott.#10: Byrdie (byrdie) on Sep 13, 2009
Fun to solve, especially when you force yourself to stick with logic in the process.#11: Diana W (aeris) on Feb 2, 2011 [SPOILER]
