Beverage alcohol (ethanol) is a psychoactive drug that changes brain chemistry and can become lethal in high doses. Alcohol poisoning is an acute toxic condition resulting from exposure to excessive quantities of alcohol within a short period of time. Ethanol is metabolized in the liver at a rate of approximately one drink per hour, with wide variation depending on conditions. Rapid consumption of large quantities of alcohol can overload the liver’s metabolic capacity, causing the blood alcohol concentration [BAC] to rise rapidly. At BACs of 0.25 to 0.40 grams/deciliter, alcohol poisoning can lead to slurred speech, ataxia, stupor, coma, and eventually to death.

Alcohol depresses nerves that control involuntary actions such as breathing and the gag reflex (which prevents choking). A fatal dose of alcohol will eventually stop these functions.

It is common for someone who drank excessive alcohol to vomit since alcohol is an irritant to the stomach. There is then the danger of choking on vomit, which could cause death by asphyxiation in a person who is not conscious because of intoxication.

Sorry, I'm an alcohol educator, and I could not pass up the opportunity to balance the humor of seeing someone drunk with the sobering reality of the risk everyone should be aware of.

I'm glad you put this in Teresa cause far too often you get a couple of duffus guys who will do this sort of thing thinking it's funny when in fact it can be very dangerous. This was done to me when my son was born, some of my friends had a little stag party for me to celebrate.Imagine the travesty if something bad happened and my son never got a chance to know his father.
