I think "cootie catchers" were made by folding pieces of paper in intricate designs along the diagonals, making two pockets in which one could insert fingers, to "open" it, and catch a cootie. Of course, I never had any cooties!

I remember those being used as fortune-telling devices. You could find out the name of the person you're going to marry, what sort of home you'll live in, etc. It was called MASH, for Mansion, Apartment, Shack, House.
