Puzzle Description:

Is it wrong to have cigarette advertising on tv and in magazines.I'm not so sure, the tobacco industry is hugh and generates employment in many ways, unfortunately in the medical field as well. However it brings in tax dollars which end up supporting many services provided by governments.Cigarette smoking was all around me as i grew up and my father died from emphysema due to cigarettes, but i never smoked. My kids grew up with non-smoking parents but still ended up being smokers until they had their own children then they had the sense to quit.I'm not sure advertising influences,it's a conscious decision we all make without provocation.

i think mostly ciggys are started with youngins & peep pressure
#2: Jota (jota) on Jul 3, 2011
I think is the only legal substance that is treated as if it were not.
Nice solve.

Advertising does influence the young; the tobacco companies have advertised heavily in Asia as smoking has declined in North America, and guess what? A lot of Asians have taken up smoking cigarettes in the past generation, where it was much less done before. This should be the last gasp (pun intended) for big tobacco. Hopefully, lawsuits will come from everywhere to stop it, finally...

i agree Tom,peer pressure is the main reason kids take it up,and Gary I don't disagree with what you saying but how do we make up the lost jobs and revenue?
#5: annalivia (annalivia) on Jul 3, 2011 [SPOILER]
nice puzzle aldege. both the pbn and the question.
#6: Jota (jota) on Jul 3, 2011
That's what's insane about it. The government subsidizes the tobacco. Why?.
The money from taxes is used to cure the people that's sick from it, crazy!

#7: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Jul 3, 2011
Kinda like the pharmaceutical companies; they don't WANT to find cures, because they make far more money by treating symptoms.

Good puzzle, Aldege.

Conscious decisions are not as conscious as you think.

Has anyone read the new book "Incognito" by neuroscientist David Eagleman? Very interesting and thought provoking.
#9: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on Jul 3, 2011
Thx Annalivia. Jota, and Kristen unfortunately what your both saying is true,it's all about money and it's a big dilemma.Thx everyone for voicing your thoughts and opinions.
#10: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on Jul 3, 2011
Thx Teresa,no i have not read his book but i would like to. When you say conscious decisions are not as conscious as we think are you referring to subliminal messages?

I agree with Gary. Also, Aldege, the solution to lost jobs and revenue is to find another produce that will grow in the same environment. That will generate jobs. Also, it will free up moneys for research into illnesses that are not born by desire (such as cancers, MD, MS, and birth defects, to name a few). The government can get revenue from alternative energies. Without all the smoking, people will have more money to concentrate on things such as spending, education, and families. Maybe one of those newly educated scientists can come up with the solution to world crises. Just my opinion.
#12: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on Jul 4, 2011
Well Ellen you bring up some good solutions to the employment and lost revenue issues, were already producing more corn to be used for E85 fuel, perhaps scientist can come up with a better use for tobacco crops.I'm sure once the production of cigarettes is outlawed someone will have a better use for tobacco. Wouldn't it be great and a bit ironic if they discovered that the extract of tobacco combined with that of another crop proved to be a serum that cures cancer.

An interesting discussion. Fun solve, Aldege.

When I see how much cigarettes cost to buy, I believe that if I had been a smoker, I would not be as well off as I am financially today. So I spend my discretionary income on gas for my SUV and take road trips, spreading my wealth around the country's hotels and restaurants!
#15: Aldege Cholette (aldege) on Jul 4, 2011
Thx Lilly, interesting Joel so i guess there are all kinds of scenarios that show that banning cigarette production may not affect the economy as adversely as some of us may think.
#16: annalivia (annalivia) on Jul 4, 2011 [SPOILER]
personally, I think that if cig adverts are banned and cigs are banned (I cannot imagine they will be.... there is too much of an 'addiction'? peer pressure? willful 'there's no one gonna tell ME what to do', etc..... whoever wants to smoke, will.

and I certainly think that some other product will be brought in to alleviate the deficit. and that product may not be as benevolent as tobacco. we are manipulated, plain and simple.
#17: Tom O'Connell (sensei69) on Jul 4, 2011
