Puzzle Description:

Energy Resource: Geothermal Power uses the earth's own heat to produce steam to power a generator or turbine. And that little white light up there? That's my brother camping out in the mountains, using biomass energy to keep warm.

The earth's crust is heated by the decay of radioactive elements. The heat is carried by magma or water beneath the earth's surface. Some of the heat reaches the surface via geysers and hot springs throughout the world.

Geothermal power can be used to directly heat buildings. Also, the pressurized steam from super hot water piped up from below the earth's surface can be used to power turbines to generate electricity. There is a city in Iceland that is totally powered by geothermal energy.

Tom, you are so observant! They are Zamberlans, the best for backpacking and bushwhacking.

Aldege, take your family to Yellowstone Park sometime. There are lots of hot springs in Canada too where you can see the steam escaping from the earth.

You don't need hot water or steam to produce geothermal energy though. Just the temperature of the earth is enough. There is a home system that can be built that pipes air through the ground, which is a constant temperature of around 55-60F (15C) only 6-10 feet deep, all year round! So when its very cold outside, the warmer air can be pumped in and condensed in a furnace to warm your house, and in the summer the process is reversed to cool your house.

And Aldege, if you are smelling beans, well, I think it might be time to change Destyny's diaper! :-D

And that would be the most powerful energy of all. You have inspired me, Tom. Let's see what comes of it. :-)
