Six in 10 Americans favor increasing offshore drilling for oil and gas in US coastal areas, up 20% from 50% in May 2010 (Gallup poll).

The first offshore well was constructed in 1891 in a fresh water lake in Ohio.

The earliest known oil wells were drilled in China in 347 AD. They used drill bits attached to bamboo poles. Ancient records of China and Japan refer to the use of natural gas for lighting and heating. Petroleum was known as "burning water" in Japan in the 7th century.

Today there are great oil and natural gas reserves in the ocean off the shores of California and Louisiana, but laws restrict further drilling. There is a big market for oil rigs in Asia now.

As America consumes more, and oil prices continue to rise, public support of offshore drilling is expected to increase.

So, how many of you carpool? I work at home as much as possible, and do long-distance trainings to large groups online. I'm such a good girl. :-)
