According to the interwebs, tarmac is short for tarmacadam, or tar-penetrating macadam. :)

I've always used "tarmac" as the name for the paved area that planes drive on before take-off, not as a type of pavement.

Boyfriend and I once got lost on the dirt roads of WV. We saw two girls walking and asked directions. "Well, you go two miles and you'll get to Macadam." As if it were a destination....
