question from somewhere in quebec: what that number exactly ? Don't you have the 911??
we have 112#4: Gypso (Gypso) on Sep 16, 2007
Thank you Sylvain. The numbers were just random. But I think it's really interesting that you and I have 911 as an emergency # and M2 has 112!#5: Twillis (twillis) on Oct 27, 2007
Anyone else have different emergency rescue numbers?
Does anyone know how we derived these numbers? I don't.
Perhaps the answer is here...#6: Petra Lassen (Stjarna) on Sep 17, 2007

It's 112 here in Sweden. Mouth Nose Eyes, as some clever person is telling children.#7: Twillis (twillis) on Oct 27, 2007
I seem to remember from a song that it's 999 in England.#8: Gypso (Gypso) on Sep 17, 2007
Very Interesting site Twillis. Thank you for running that one down. It sounds like no one really knows for certain why we use 911 here in North America but the speculations sound reasonable. I would guess that the numbers used in other countries were chosen based on similar reasons.#9: Jan Wolter (jan) on Sep 24, 2007
It sounds like the concept started in England with 999. The real mystery is why they chose that. Those of use who remember rotary phones know how annoying dialing three nines in a row would be. Takes a long time. Must be frustrating in an emergency. That it got shortened to 911 in the US (and apparently New Zealand at least initially used 111) makes total sense.#10: Yulia (yug) on Oct 22, 2007
Interesting... I found this page - http://www.sccfd.org/travel.html#11: Gypso (Gypso) on Oct 22, 2007
It looks like there is 112 for Russia as well, but I've never heard of it. It's probably very recent addition. 01/02/03/04 were standards for fire/police/ambulance/gas leak as long as I remember. I think the idea was that there are no phone #s starting with 0, so you dial that, and then - one of the basic #s
VERY cool Yulia!! How did you find your way to this site?. Are you from Santa Clara County? This is a site well worth bookmarking. Very handy. Thank you! ^v^#12: Yulia (yug) on Oct 23, 2007
Don't even ask, Gypso :) No, I'm not from Santa Clara, I just found their fire dept page randomly googling.. Thank you for the puzzle and a food for thought :) !#13: Gypso (Gypso) on Oct 24, 2007
Oh, oh! You know Yulia, it wasn't until you said, "Don't even ask, Gypso", that it occurred to me that you might have had need of emergency services in a locale who's emergency number was unknown to you. But I won't ask you, as you have asked me not to do so. I hope everything went well. :)!#14: harris harris (torough4u) on Apr 9, 2008
