A lighthouse on an island. My dad painted hundreds of oil paintings of ships and lighthouses and this is a small tribute to him.

I'm a big fan of lighthouses

My home state lies hundreds of miles from the nearest ocean, but has 116 lighthouses. I know lots of people very active in the effort to try to preserve and restore as many as possible.

Huge ships go up the river from the ocean, though, don't they? I visited Duluth once and did all the touristy stuff.

Jan lived in Michigan, surrounded by the Great Lakes. Over 3,200 miles of shoreline, and as Arduinna suggested, many, many big ships. Not all the lighthouses are active now, with technology they are less needed, plus it's not always easy to find people to be lighthouse keepers nowadays. Only some are open to the public, but a few of those have little museums too. This site has lots of photos, and a list of 129 lighthouses in the state, with coordinates and areas each serves.
