The question is there but nobody dares answer it I think.

Gypso: say the a like the o in offer.

Incredibly, we were saying it correctly! I must go back and re read the quiz. Last I saw you were being "nice".
#5: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 14, 2007

I have £ and $ ½ ¨^'*#| but the keys share. I have a special alt and some of the keys have 3 different symbols on them. Then of course I have åÅ äÄ öÖ. My keyboard should have Euro but it is too old. It took me a while to get used to a new keyboard but now it's ok.

Dowm here in southern Cal, well over half of the population speaks spanish so the tilde is used often, but on computers you really can't go back and type the tilde over the n stroke like you did with a manual typewriter. There is also a key combo that you can hit that will give you the tilded n. a double tilde is scientific notation for "approzimately", but again, there are no double stroking. So I have no idea what you can do with it, Jan,
UNLESS it is part of the foresight of today's keyboard makers anticipating the next generation of machines.
Or its just there for people who indulge in making Pogo characters out of keyboard strokes.

And before I forget, really good one, Syl, one of my faves for your WoB series.

#15: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 15, 2007
if you go to the table of caracter it show you basicly everything you can do (with alt+ 4 number)
#16: My Johansson (villinte) on Sep 28, 2007
And I'm such a geek. My name "My" is the greek letter µ, which is written with alt+0181. So Alt0181 is my name on many online communities, and things like ICQ.
#17: Sylvain "WCPman" (qwerty) on Sep 28, 2007
µ hello to you
#18: Gypso (Gypso) on Sep 28, 2007
Hi µ! This is the only time I'll probably use your Greek letter name. I don't know yet how to get to it out of my keyboard yet. Shall I call you alt0181?
#19: My Johansson (villinte) on Oct 1, 2007
On here I registered with the name Villinte, which is a manifestation of my small, whiny, anxiety-person ("vill inte" means "don't wanna"). If I could,, I might change it to Alt0181, since I find that name more fitting to myself. But it would probably be vary confusing for everyone who hasn't read these comments, so stick with Villinte.
#20: Leona Johansson (leona) on Jun 29, 2008
Hello Jag klarade @ (at) / Leona
#21: Gypso (Gypso) on Jun 29, 2008
Leona, do you and Villinte know each other?
#22: m2 (mercymercy) on Jun 30, 2008
vad bra leona!
#23: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Oct 28, 2011
The tilde is useful for approximations. "I need ~50 potatoes for this recipe." or "That painting was made ~1850." (Read "about" or "around")

Otherwise, all of these odd characters were *obviously* added in anticipation of emoticons! ^~^ >:@

I guess I should have said "traditional" uses. It's also used for delineating layers of menus: File|Import|From CSV

i see menus delineated with > more often: File>Import>From CSV
these days i see the pipe very often as a graphic/aesthetic separator. i assume because slashes evoke computer pathing:

or maybe\probably people can't/won't figure out which slash to use\abuse, so they compromise/give up?

I hate when a / forward slash is called a \ backslash. This happens a lot on TV, when the on-air "personality" tells the audience a web address.
