personally, knowing or not knowing what the image is supposed to be is not such a big deal. It doesnt make getting there any less valid in terms of solving it. Maybe that goes back to Eugene Maleska, the late great NYTimes crossword editor who felt that peeking at teh answer if you needed a hint was not cheating if it helped you enjoy the puzzle more. So I guess what I'm saying is that a "spoiled" puz doen't bother me, but to each his own. [movies are a way different subject]#6: m2 (mercymercy) on Sep 12, 2007
This is why I love that Jan gives the solver a choice to show or not to show the spoilers. I use the classification when appropriate.#7: Gypso (Gypso) on Sep 12, 2007
JC, I meant to tell you that at the end of that movie the guy wakes up and it was all a dream.#8: J.C. Anderson (jc.noserdna) on Sep 12, 2007
Wait, wait, what movie? What thread are we going back to?#9: m2 (mercymercy) on Sep 12, 2007
Ha Ha Ha you have to find it. Use the new search. :)#10: J.C. Anderson (jc.noserdna) on Sep 12, 2007
never mind (and ha ha M2). This is what I get for not rereading the previous comments before I answer. I don't even remember what I said the night before.#11: Jan Wolter (jan) on Sep 17, 2007
I really enjoyed this puzzle. It does solve logically, though there are some slightly tricky bits to get through.#12: Ian Smith (dragonfreak) on May 24, 2009
I've seen the picture before. I have the impression it is a common doodle on medieval manuscripts, but I'm not really sure if it has any particular significance.
One of the things that I really liked with the subtle way that a very symmetrical picture was turned into a non-symmetrical puzzle. The blue lines extend one pixel further toward the bottom than toward the top, and there is an extra mostly blank column on the right. The little bits of color in the corners keep that rightmost column from being empty, so you can't just blank it out and forget it. This means that the logic on the top, bottom, and right all work out a bit differently, and though the shapes on all four sides are pretty much the same, you have to find different ways to solve them.
I don't know if this was all deliberate on the part of the designer, or just a happy accident, but I like it very much. I thank Kasia for taking some extra effort to make the puzzle not only attractive, but interesting to solve.
I liked the assymetry also, and it does look familiar. I don't think this is a spoiler.#13: Byrdie (byrdie) on Sep 8, 2013 [SPOILER]
