Im guessing its a mistake that there is a helper button on the puzzles when you select them from the best puzzleslists.

btw im not sure I understand the system behind how the puzzles get on those lists. Can anyone explain it again... Solvly.

Puzzles have a helper button if you've solved them before. I guessing that that is what is happening.

The criteria for getting on the list are different for difficulty levels. Currently:

LevelDifficultyQualityRaters
Beginner0-1.5>2.915
Easy1.5-2.5>3.715
Intermediate2.5-3.25>4.015
Hard3.25-4>4.010
Brain-Busting4-5>4.05
So, to get on the beginner list, a puzzle has to have difficulty > 1.5 and ≤ 2.5, it has to have a quality rating above 2.9 and it has to have been rated by at least 15 different people. For any category, puzzles must have a unique and logical solution.

I'm not entirely happy with these lists as they stand, and will probably fiddle with the criteria more.

I'm also expecting a slingshot effect. When puzzles get on the list, more people will solve them, and some of them will drop off the list, because generally being rated by more people lowers the average rating.

Right now, the beginner list doesn't do a very good job of picking out good beginner puzzles. I need to study that more.

thanks Jan I must have only looked after I had solved them.

And thanks fore the explaination I think I understand now.

I was actually thinking of making a Topic where people could post there favorite puzzles.... Not needed now :)

wow that great

the only sad thing is I got only 2 of mine in all the list

snif snif....lol

great idea

Jan also someone asked me if it can be done to put all the WC puzzle in one sopt so they can be easier to find maybe another page for all of them could be cool ( we already have the best three of each week in honnor) I was just mentionning it

Thanks again for that great Idea

PS: Adam going to go "banana" when he see how many of is are in ( nearly all is latest) great job monkeyman

Hmm...I thought you'd just be able to go to the "find" page and search for "WC" but that doesn't seem to work. I'll have to investigate that. Probably has something to do with MySQL's full word indexing. Probably doesn't index two-letter words.

I really ought to implement tags.

that was my first idea just go in find puzzle and type WC but as you said it doesnt work

Thanks, Sylvain. That is flattering that so many of my puzzles are in. Many more would probably be as well, if they got more raters.

Jan, are the puzzles all solely ranked according to chronological submission? Is there a way to rank the puzzles (each within its own category of beginner, intermediate, etc) according to quality level at each stage of difficulty?

For example, let's take the intermediate category. Start with the difficulty level of 2.5, and put the highest ranking quality puzzles at that difficulty level in descending order (highest quality to lowest; puzzles tied for quality rank can then be in random or chronological order) and then when the lowest quality puzzle at level 2.5 difficulty (which would be 4.0) is listed, then move to 2.75 difficulty, and repeat the process, etc.

Just a thought.

jan..Why cant I edit my topic title? like I can edit my puzzles and my comments?
#12: Jan Wolter (jan) on Oct 13, 2008
Uh, because I haven't implemented that yet. However, I just added it to the To-Do list so it should happen within a decade or so.

Oooh.. is that a promise Jan? ;)
