Ha! I saw it before I read the description. Just enough detail to make it recognizable. This is something I've never done. Have you tried this?

A very nice small puzzle. I usually don't like blank rows and columns, but the extra white space improves this image.

Yes, they can serve a purpose. Some people have said they like the 5x5 grids to be kept intact as it makes counting easier. I tend to agree with that.
