Are there any rules against certain things that can be in a puzzle?

No rules. Solve as you see fit, and have fun.

Personally, though, I always try to solve with only logic. I like being certain that every pixel I place is 100% correct through logic.

Other people can have fun differently.

If the content is graphic, most puzzle creators will add a warning to the title. Other troubling content may get removed.

Solvers prefer a puzzle that is not trivial. Fill-ins with no white spaces are the worst. We also hate puzzles with multiple solution.

Most of us like puzzles that have a pleasing images upon completion. You can't go wrong with a pun or joke that gives the audience a grown or laugh at the end. Most enjoy a puzzle with an AHA! moment toward the end. That little pop of recognition is oddly satisfying.

The Goldilocks puzzle is a black and white 20x20 with a slightly tricky solve and a cool image. Oh...people also enjoy guessing on the meaning of a puzzle-in-puzzle sort of thing.

Off the top of my head: No hate speech, no porn, especially no child porn; no copying of puzzles that someone else created. I try to remove as close to zero puzzles as possible, but there are probably other topics that would also not be okay -- but I'd rather that people post puzzles that most people would be glad to see and not puzzles that test out the boundaries of what's okay. As Brian said, if a puzzle might be troubling to anybody, please put a warning in the title so that people can decide for themselves whether or not they want to see it. If you want to check with me before posting something, you can reach me with this e-mail form: https://unixmama.com/email_valerie.html
-- I'd always rather be asked first than try to figure out what to do after something is already posted.

The best puzzles are fun for everybody -- Brian made a great description!

Oh wow, I completely misread that question. I read it to be about solving a puzzle rather than creating a puzzle.

Note to self: stop reading the forum right before bed

Go to the Create Puzzles site and besides the general rules Jan listed at the top of the page, click on the Advice on Creating Puzzles. Jan wrote some woncerful advice there about how to creat puzzles, what makes them interesting, and what to avoid.

Here's a link to the page Norma is talking about -- it is good advice!
