Endophytes are microbes that colonize and live between the cells of plants, without having any negative mpact on the host plant.

Taxol is isolated from the bark of the Yew tree. The National Cancer Institute conducted a search of natural products exhibiting anticancer activity. Over 100,000 compounds were extracted from over 35,000 plant species, but Taxol proved to be most useful.

Because roughly 6 trees must be sacrificed to treat one patient, many efforts are underway to improve availability and to increase synthetic yields of Taxol.

tough puzzle but still fun to solve and a great image at the end. this gives me much appreciation for the research behind the development of new cancer drugs.

Me too. I've been working 60 hours a week lately, and it looks like I have a few more weeks like that ahead of me. Once things settle down, I will have more time to devote to creating something worthy of the WC. :-)
