Topic #188: Graying out individual clues issue

Jan,

I've noticed that sometimes when I load a puzzle that I had partially solved, it will sometimes not bring back the graying of the clues that I had clicked when I saved it the first time. In other words, if I had a row of "15 4 9 1" for the clues and I had completed the 15 and 9 part of that row, then I will click on the 15 and 9 to gray them out. I will then save the puzzle and go somewhere else. When I get back to this puzzle, I will click on the Saved Puzzles tab, click the puzzle, and Click Load.

Sometimes none of the clues I had manually clicked will return as gray.

Sometimes some of the clues I had manually clicked will return as gray.

Sometimes all of the clues I had manually clicked will return as gray.

I haven't noticed a consistent pattern as to how/when this happens, so I have not been able to reliably reproduce the issue yet. Of course, when I try to reproduce the issue, it won't happen! Ugh...

I'll post again if I find something, but I just wanted to let you know that this is happening.

I've noticed this problem too, but haven't figured it out.

The grayed numbers are saved as part of the undo history. It would possibly be interesting to notice if the undo history is restored when the gray numbers are not.

After a certain amount of time, the undo histories of completed puzzles are supposed to disappear (this saves a lot of disk space - it really makes no sense to save all undo histories forever).

Here is what I have seen in that situation: More often than not, when I load a partially solved puzzle, rows/columns that are COMPLETELY solved are usually still grayed out, but in rows/columns that are only PARTIALLY solved, I don't think I have ever had the completed clue numbers gray when I reload it.

I didn't pay specific attention to the details of this occurrence early on, but over the last year or so, that is what I have noticed. I try to never start a puzzle I don't think I will have time to finish just because of that issue later on; especially for larger puzzles.

I can say that I've never had this problem on any system I've used. I'm think I'm using IE7 on all of them although 2 use Vista and one is on XP.

I also logged in from a nephew's computer while on a trip using Safari. I completed those puzzles in one session so I can't speak to this issue under that circumstance. That was in June.

I do have the issue most of the time with Firefox running on Vista. Occasionally it seems a few random clues I have grayed out remain, but usually I lose them all.
