This is a male ostrich, with black & white feathers; the female is all brown. Ostriches live on the African savannah, and serve as lookouts in mixed herds with zebra, wildebeests, and other herbivores. Anytime I've seen footage of ostriches running, they do indeed keep their necks straight up.
