Our dog, Lion, was half coyote and loved to howl.

Yes, even though that looks like a fox, it's supposed to be our old dog, Lion. He was half coyote and half random husky. Beautiful orange fur and scary psychotic-blue eyes.

I was thinking fox, as you mentioned above. Good puzzle.

I didn't know what this was until I read your description, but then it was very clear. My dog is mostly labrador retriever and he howls when my daughter plays the harmonica!

Looking around, it does seem as if foxes do howl sometimes, but it sure doesn't sound like a dog howl.

Lion's was a deep-throated, resonant howl. He would often chime in with the fire siren at noon each day. And yes, he would take up that classic pose.

Funny, you have a cat named Wombat.

I actually started using the name Wombat after some friends had nicknamed a cat that.

All of our animals whom we named ourselves have been named after other animals. Wombat was very much like a wombat, mostly placid, but quite pugnacious if the mood took her.

Our current two cats are Raven and Rhino.

The link didn't work for me, but there are some foxes that live by the pond near our house, and they make kind of a crying sound. I heard them long before I ever saw them, usually at dusk when I was out walking my dog, and the sound was really spooky until finally one night I saw the fox on the path. It would appear and then run away again, and I think it was trying to lead us away from its babies.
