Puzzle Description:

Is 867-5309 a real or imaginary telephone number ? (Can it be used to reach Jenny?)

For those not familiar with the 80s song and the litigation that followed over the telephone number: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/867-5309/Jenny

I probably should have learned my lesson from introducing fake mathematical logic into a title name (puzzle 7223), but this title also plays on an actual math term in that there are such things as imaginary numbers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imaginary_number

it was a real number of his ex-girlfriend. she lived with her family and they got so many calls they had to change the number. i saw this documentary on MTV once. but for some reason the wikipedia has something different. not that i dont trust wikipedia but when u have the band members on MTV saying it was tommys ex then i guess ill just have to believe that.

Well now I'll have this song stuck in my head the rest of the day! Clever way to render the image, though -- I didn't see the whole phone number until I was all the way done.

hh, you can't always trust the band either.

Very busy puzzle. It was like a Picasso doing numbers.

Odd - I agreed: Very busy puzzle. Very Picasso like.

It was definitely more interesting to solve than other "just numbers" puzzles.

Believe it or not, you'll find Jenny in the 814 area code, in central Pennsylvania. Try a reverse lookup! She must have quite a sense of humor to list her number.

I think there were several lawsuits, since theoretically there could be one in every area code. Back in the day, I remember a few fluff news pieces about people and entities who had the number. There was one about a woman named Jenny who was getting tired of the prank calls, and a business named Jenny's reached out to her and the phone company so the business could have the number. I hope their receptionists were trained in snarky responses to prank callers.
