Puzzle Description:

A wonderful Luo woman named Jane rescued a starving, sick baby named Bahati in Tanzania. She soothed his dry skin with oil and cared for him, trying to nurse him back to health. True story, continued in the comments.

My best friend from Colorado is a nurse who volunteered to work at a clinic in Matoso, a small village in Kenya on the shore of Lake Victoria. She wrote to me about Bakati who was brought to the clinic by Jane. Here is what my friend wrote to me:

"In spite of Jane's care, the little one did not improve in health or appearance, except for the smile of being loved. At the clinic we did everything we could, but the boy was obviously near death. Money was scraped together to transport him to the nearest hospital.

"There, a little old Hungarian doctor who has spent many years working in health-ravaged countries happened to be working, and he made a diagnosis of TB meningitis. He literally snatched the boy from death's door.

"As I write this letter, this chubby faced, crooked-smiled, cross-eyed little boy is hovering over my shoulder asking for candy and a schoolbook!"

For those who are interested in hearing more stories like this, here is a blog by another medical volunteer, with great photos:

BTW, Bahati means good fortune in Swahili, the national language of Tanzania. I don't know if the boy is an orphan, most likely he is. The clinic is run together with a home for orphans and more recently a library.

A wonderful image and a moving story. Not a slouch to solve but not overly difficult either. I solved Jane's head early on and it's truly amazing how so few pixels so clearly defined her face. I saw it right away.
