Puzzle Description:

Quahog -- A kind of ocean clam, or bivalve mollusk, found in the waters of the North Atlantic. They come in two varieties: Arctica islandica, the ocean quahog; and Mercenaria mercenaria, the bay quahog. The common name, poquauhock, is taken from the languages of the Narragansett and Wampanoag Indians, and it's thought that today's pronunciation can be traced to those origins. The Narragansetts, from the west side of Narragansett Bay, probably pronounced the word "po-kwa-hok." Today's western Rhode Islanders thus pronounce it "kwa-hog." The Wampanoags of the East Bay called it "po-ko-hok," and today, eastern Rhode Islanders likewise say "ko-hog."

This was very fun to solve. But way TMI. :-)
Not even close to requiring any guessing.

Lol! I knew this because of a Family Guy episode. They live in the town of Quahog, and every year there's a Quahog Festival (Peter dressed as a giant clam).

I disagree, I loved all the extra info! Isn't it funny how different pronunciations can persist even over the distance of a few miles?

I grew up close to Rhode Island and could never figure out the correct pronunciation because I heard it spoken too many different ways. When I read this explanation, it was interesting to me and it made more sense, but I can see why others might find it boring.
