Puzzle Description:

Association Football was nicknamed "soccer" by british college players. That became the official name in America, while Britain and the rest of the world called it "football".

Fun solving. I always wondered why the difference, thanks for the trivia.

Nice ball!

Oh, that makes sense. Soccer is short for Association?

"Football" is much more sensible, since they use their feet to move the ball. American football needs a better name. Like American rugby, or something.

Soccer was indeed short for association, with an "er" added on as a slang informal: 'socc -er, just as rugby is called rugger.

Rugby is actually "rugby football". Association Football was so named in order to distinguish it from the (many) other sorts including rugby.

Very unusual image but very clear. Thanks for the bit of education.

I agree with Kristen. American football definitely should have a different name.

I was playing with ideas but most were a big nothing. We have baseball where the players run the basses, but yardball just doesn't cut it. It implies playing in someone's yard. We look at basketball and some how goalpost ball or uprightsball doesn't cut it either. Maybe ovalball? Nah. They say that golf was originally named flog but was outlawed so they call it golf. So. llabtoof? Meh. Anyone?

gladiatorial combat ball? :)

I've always thought LINEBALL would work. Such an integral part of the game: Line of Scrimmage, Yard Line, Goal Line, Offensive and Defensive Linemen, Linebackers, Line Judge, Line to Gain, Sidelines...actually every player's position for each play is technically determined by where they LINE up.

Excellent choice, David.

Hmm, that's promising.

The NFL wouldn't even have to change their logo...

"This has been a presentation of the National Federation of Lineball..."
