Very enjoyable puzzle, Joe. I take it this is reference to the 1995 movie "Twelve Monkeys"? I never saw it. Were there any monkeys in it? This one is a cutie.#3: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Apr 23, 2020 [SPOILER]
That's the movie. The 12 Monkeys of the title was the name of an eco-terrorist group that was thought to have released the virus that wiped out civilization in 1996. It has a convoluted plot that involves time-travel (from 2035 to 1996, among other times).
It's been a long time since I watched it, but as I remember, if there were any monkeys, they were just background lab animals.
