True story: Franz Waxman, the composer of the film's score (and first person to win the Academy Award for film scoring two years in a row) is related to me by marriage.

In the 1930's when his movies were being shown around the world, many Jews saw his name in the credits and sent him letters saying things like "Franz, buddy, pal! Remember me? How's it going? Hey, would you be interested in sponsoring me to come to the US?"

He sponsored every single one of them.
