The description is a clue to the subject using cryptic crossword clue rules.

Every cryptic clue is made up of two parts; a definition, and a literal description of the answer using wordplay. They can be in either order (though not intertwined) and there is no separation between them.

Here is a page describing some of the techniques:

BODEGOS - a record label (disc ID)
Knotted under over = Bowed
Large heads = Egos

Just kidding. I made that up. I have no idea.

LOL!! Great guess fasstar! Love your answer. Hahaha.

Hmm...Upbraid has 7 letters, and a braid is sort of knotted under, and Up! featured a house lifted by over-large head-shaped balloons, and it ends in "ID"....

You're getting a bit tenuous there, Kristen. ;-)

I'm ready for a hint.

Looks like a quilt block.

Pearled.....a crochet term I've heard my wife use, but I am not sure what it means. I think it is done so that the stitch is inverted, or that the knot is under?
#9: Bill Eisenmann (Bullet) on Jul 26, 2019
Ron I think that's "purl" ...

I'm thinking dog tags (id discs) but the rest of the clue doesn't jive ...

Here's another clue

An example of the answer is in this picture:

Well, the part of the photo that looks like the puzzle is the "roundel"...which is a disc-shaped method of ID'ing the country of origin for military aircraft...AND it is 7 letters long.

Oh! Joe said anagram! knotted is a reference to it being an anagram? "under" + O.L. = "roundel"...and "heads" = ... = .... = what, of ours, joe enjoys messing with!

Close enough, David - you'd have finished the crossword, anyway.

The clue breaks down like this:
ID disc (definition)
=
knotted (an anagram of:)
under (under)
over-large heads (+ o & l)

So, anagram of underol = roundel
