Ever hear how the story came about? Idk how accurate it is, but I remember my teacher in high school telling us that there was a get-together...(Mary Shelly's hubby is poet Percy Shelly, btw). A bunch of writers together with their wives for a weekend with crappy weather, and they decided to have a friendly competition...who could make the best scary story. The writers/poets went at it, but who would have ever thought that it was one of the wives that would win?!

I'm sure she either had help or took her time to refine her tale after the fact and before officially publishing, but the "story" is that Mary Shelly came up with the premise of Frankenstein in one night, as a competition.

I tried a mini version of the guy a few years back, puzz #23053...

I was going to make a quip about being so modern, but you stole my thunder, Joe. :)

The crappy weather was the "year without a summer" in 1816 after a giant volcano eruption in 1815.

Here's some more info:

Strangely enough, the movie "Mary Shelley" is on one of the cable movie channels this morning...and clicking the "info" button on the remote says that it takes place at Lord Byron's villa. EXACTLY about your first link...coincidence?! I think not... lol

Just a little video I whipped together as a surprise for you, Kurt.

I think the image could have been much better. It was an easy solve though and would be good for a beginner.
