Puzzle Description:

What common phrase is represented here?

#1: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Dec 2, 2018

illumination: noun
1. An illustration of text
2. That aha! feeling of understanding
#2: CB Paul (cbpaul) on Dec 3, 2018 [SPOILER]
thumbcastle? thumbs up your crown?
[And yes, this would be a spoiler, even if it's the wrong answer. Which it certainly is. sigh.]
[Clearly, I am asleep. I just don't know it yet. sigh.]
#3: JoDeen Mozena (ozymoe) on Dec 3, 2018 [SPOILER]
I've also been chewing on this in my sleep and all I can come up with this morning is, "crowning achievement."

...road to the crown?

...King me?

...Queen of the night?

...one finger of Crowne Royale?

...crown molding?

...Prince Of Tides?

...could this be a back view of King Kong's head?

......wait, wait, wait...hoooold the presses...could it be,"King cobra?" That could be a snake, right?
#4: Bill Eisenmann (Bullet) on Dec 3, 2018 [SPOILER]
Ok, so if that's a thumb, and that HAS to be a crown ... aha! It's a ruby-crowned thummingbird! That'th really thumbthing, Djthoe!

I give up ...
#5: John Macdonald (perlwolf) on Dec 3, 2018 [SPOILER]
Follow the black brick road.
#6: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Dec 3, 2018 [SPOILER]
I like "king cobra", though that isn't really a phrase, but this also reminds me of thumbthing.

Perhaps a Royal Thumb is one step up from a regular Green Thumb?

#7: Norma Dee (norm0908) on Dec 3, 2018 [SPOILER]
lol @ bullet.

With all the festive fingernail painting going on, I even thought of thumbnail.
#8: Jota (jota) on Dec 3, 2018 [SPOILER]
Royal Thumb it is!
#9: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Dec 3, 2018 [SPOILER]
It is a thumb. It is wearing a crown.

The phrase is three words long. I swear it is a common phrase.
#10: Mat (keiimaster) on Dec 3, 2018 [SPOILER]
Rule of Thumb
#11: CB Paul (cbpaul) on Dec 3, 2018 [SPOILER]
Well, if we cannot make the (tiny) leap from "crown" to "rule", we is in saaaaad shape.

Speaking of shapes, tho, I like this one.
#12: Velma Warren (Shiro) on Dec 3, 2018
Thanks Mat. I could not come up with an answer. A fun puzzle because of the blots.
#13: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Dec 3, 2018 [SPOILER]
Yay, Mat! This is indeed the Rule of Thumb. All hail the mighty Thumb! Thanks for playing, everyone.

On a (very vaguely) related note, here is a short animated film about the DOUBLE KING. "A film about love and regicide," is how the author phrases it.

This video is not for everyone. It has quite a bit of animated violence and (cartoon) gore and is drawn in a trippy 1960s "underground comix" art style.
