The description is a clue to the subject using cryptic crossword clue rules.*

Every cryptic clue is made up of two parts; a definition, and a literal description of the answer using wordplay. They can be in either order (though not intertwined) and there is no separation between them.

Here is a page describing some of the techniques:

or an easier-to-read PDF:

*The length is not given because the picture gives another clue.

I think it's Jupiter ("piter" is in "stripes"; a planet can be stony-faced) but I can't get there from the clues. And then Jupiter is Roman and he (Zeus) would send thunderbolts if we tried to paint his face.

The picture makes me think of a gorgeous dragon egg. It also looks like the AT&T logo. I guess neither of those has anything to do with the description...

It's not Jupiter. (He'd be a gassy Roman ;) With how fast the others were gotten, I thought this one would be quick, too. I'll give a clue tomorrow.

I just think it's a beautiful image. If purple were available, I'd think it were purple cabbage (probably because I just made some cole slaw) or a beautiful marble.

It is a VERY good image of a marble, well done, Joe

Well done, Koreen, it is marble.

For beginner cryptic solvers, here's the breakdown:

This is a "double definition" type clue
Paint stripes on (verb: to marble)
stony-faced Greek? (a marble = a statue) "?" can mean a punny definition.

The picture is of an aggie -- a marble made of agate

As I was solving, I thought of our own Big Blue Marble (Earth), so I guess I had the right answer all along. :)
