Wasn't that a great movie!
Easy, but fun.

Did they ever say what these guys were called? Oh, maybe in the credits but I don't remember it in the movie. And yes it was a fun movie, Mike. Thanks Gaynor for a fun, recognizable puzzle.

The critters are called porgs. When they were filming the island (Skellig Michael, off the coast or Ireland), they couldn't remove all of the puffins from the wide shots, so they just created alien birds.

Skellig Michael was the home of an Irish Catholic monastery, which has some pretty amazing history. It was almost perfectly defensible, because any invaders had to go single file up narrow switchback paths, where they would have been bombarded by boulders, boiling oil, you name it. There's a book called _How the Irish Saved Civilization_ (by Thomas Cahill) that talks about how they made copies of all the books they could find. So when the Christian church was burning all the heretical works they could find, the monks of Skellig Michael had the only remaining volumes of scores of Greek and Roman texts.

Thanks for the history lesson, Kristen. :)

Didn't see the movie but thought it was a cute creature.
