Puzzle Description:

Pull over to the left please. An officer will be with you shortly. Oh,Oh! Niki,Paytyn and I went to Maine yesterday. When we approached the border crossing to come back into Canada the car ahead of us was being checked by the drug dog. No problem we figured, except I had some of my medical marijuana in the van from the day before. I'm putting you under arrest the agent said. Would you like to call your lawyer? Apparently your not allowed to bring your marijuana across the border. Medical or not. They call that smuggling.

Oh dear!

Amen Kristen.

Aldege I don't know what the Canadian penalties are, but if it happened in Connecticut I would be happy to defend you. You (and everybody else out there) should ALWAYS speak to a lawyer prior to answering any questions whatsoever from a police officer. In fact, the back of my business card (to be read to the officer on scene) says: "I understand you have the right to ask me questions. I have the right not to answer those questions. I want to call my lawyer and a member of my family. I want to exercise my right to remain silent and consult with a lawyer without exception. I do not want to talk about giving up my rights until I have talked to a lawyer. I do not consent to a search of any kind, including my car and my person."

These rights are guaranteed to all Americans by our Constitution, which to me is the most wonderful document ever penned by mankind.

I also fully support and am very active in the area of medical marijuana. Now if only our federal government would properly re-classify it from its current status as a "Schedule 1" drug (highest potential for addiction with no known medical application, including heroin, cocaine and LSD) to perhaps Schedule III or IV. I have many clients who benefit greatly from medical cannabis, and I'm glad to be in a state that has the program.

Here is a link to the Schedules: www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/21cfr/21usc/812.htm

Good luck, Aldege! I foresee puzzles winding through the Canadian justice system!

Oh No Aldege! I hope there is going to be a happy ending!
#4: Norma Dee (norm0908) on Sep 6, 2017
Don't keep us in suspense, Aldege. A really good puzzle about an unfortunate experience.

Wonderful advice, Bill. I am going to copy and paste where I think it will do some good.

My son died from AIDS over 25 years ago, when they had practically nothing in the way of medical help. He had a friend who would come to visit frequently bringing with him the best marijuana he could find as my son said it really helped with the all the painful side effects of AIDS. I was totally in favor of it and looked forward to his friend's visits. (That was before I knew about contact highs. LOL)

Aldege, how awful! Were you arrested in Maine? Were you able to get back home?
#6: Teresa K (fasstar) on Sep 6, 2017
First, awesome puzzle, fun solve (love that goatee).

Second, great info, Bill. I'm experinecing lots of nerve pain. Not too bad at the present, but if it gets worse (and I expect it will), I will not hesitate to ask my doctor for a card.

Next, Norma, I'm so sorry about your son. Too bad he couldn't have had more relief, but nice that he had a friend that could help. Reminds me of a song. :-)

Finally, Aldege, PLEASE let us know what happened next. Are you still in deep doo doo? You naughty hippie smuggler you. :-) Seriously, I hope things turn out okay.

Marijuana is legal now in Maine, but could not find anything related to crossing the border with it.

Fun puzzle, but, oh! What a story! I hope you are home safely now, Aldege, and it wasn't too awful. If you need a character reference, there's a whole community here that will attest to the fact that you are quite a character.

I am so sorry about your son, Norma, but glad that he had a friend - and a mother! - who stood by him.

Speaking of marijuana, Aldege, are you old enough to remember the Le Dain Commission? It seems Gerald Le Dain was my uncle (although I did not know it at the time) - he married my mother's sister Cynthia and whisked her away to Canada.

First of all thx everyone for your advice and concern.
This story gets better. My van is in the shop getting a new transmission(under warranty thankfully). So I was driving a loaner from the dealership. The dog went thru the car and hit on Niki's purse. They found her medication in prescription bottles and immediately started thinking we had some harder drugs on us. The officer with the dog said that if we have other stuff hidden that we better tell him now or the fine will be higher and they will impound the vehicle. I told him we didn't. So he brought the dog thru again and then told us we were under arrest. He brought us into the office and questioned us individually. Meanwhile Paytyn was fussing so Niki had to breast feed her right there. Then she needed her diaper changed but I had used the last diaper in her baby bag so I couldn't change her. Then I told the officer that I had to pick up Chastydy from daycare at five. He said don't worry we will make arrangements for her and your other kids. Now I figure great I'm going to jail and the kids will be put in foster care. Plus they're impounding a car I don't own. It took 4 hrs for them to put all my marijuana and Niki's pills thru the scanner and weigh them. Finally they said we were free to go cause there was such a small amount and we had no other drugs in our possession. There was no fine and no impounding of the vehicle. They did keep my marijuana and revoked our Nexus cards but they did send a female officer out to buy us some diapers and baby wipes. They were actually pretty friendly.

These were the Canadian border officers. The ones in Maine are usually even nicer.

All turned out ok,but it was scary for a moment. I figured you guys would like to hear about another of my misadventures.lol. :)

Wow! Didn't expect that! Glad everything turned out ok :)
#11: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Sep 7, 2017
Sheesh. They didn't even let you keep your prescribed medication? And you're no longer allowed to travel to the states? Or do you just need to show a passport now?
#12: valerie o..travis (bigblue) on Sep 7, 2017
wow, wow, wow, what a story and puzzle...so happy everything turned out ok :)
#13: Aldege Cholette (Aldege) on Sep 7, 2017
Thx Gaynor. I'm not sure if a character reference from any of my friends here would of helped or hurt me.lol. No I have no knowledge of the Le Dain Commission. What is it? Does your aunt still live in Canada and if so where? Glad you emjoyed the puzzle. :)
#14: Aldege Cholette (Aldege) on Sep 7, 2017
Thx Alison,Kristen and Travis. I think I might file an appeal on them taking my prescribed marijuana Kristen. I don't understand that if it's legal in Maine and about to be legal in New Brunswick and legal for me because I have a medical card. How can it be considered smuggling? That stuff isn't cheap and I'm only allowed 1 gram per day which means I don't have any till the end of the month. I'll have to rely on sex as pain diversion therapy and we all know where that will lead to for me. We can go stateside with birth certificates which we carry with us.

I knew this would be entertaining Travis. :)

The Le Dain Commission must have been before your time, as it was before its own. It was a 1969-1972 Canadian government study that recommended the de-criminalization of possession and cultivation marijuana for personal use. At the time, this was not an acceptable finding. I learned all of this after the fact, from an obituary, as my mother did not maintain contact with her sisters after everyone emigrated (one to Canada, one to the US, one to Australia). A bit of Canadian history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Dain_Commission_of_Inquiry_into_the_Non-Medical_Use_of_Drugs

the only thing you ever have to answer is your name, and what you are doing right now....

and now lawyers recommend to NOT take the fifth. apparently, it's allowed for officers to testify that you took the fifth, which makes you look bad in the eyes of a jury. the new recommendation is to not answer any questions without saying that you're taking the fifth.... just keep saying "I want a lawyer" as your answer to any question until the officer stops asking questions altogether

puff puff pass, Al ;)

I am so glad to hear that everything turned out well. Well I guess it wasn't all well, you lost your med. I had friends that deal with chronic pain and marijuana helps the most. One even moved from here in Iowa to Colorado just to be able to use it.
#20: Diana Ball (dianaball) on Sep 14, 2017
Wow. Thank goodness you all made it home and that they were somewhat compassionate, even tending to Paytyn's needs. I sure hope the NEXUS revocation doesn't put you on some sort of black list for re-entry to the US. That would be so Trumpian.

Thanks for another fun puzzle!
#21: Aldege Cholette (Aldege) on Sep 15, 2017
Thx Diana. When I call to appeal and get my drugs back I'll probably get my Nexus cards back too. :)
