Puzzle Description:

Last month there were 7 great blue heron gathered at the lake where I jog. Everyone stopped to watch - we usually only see one or two at most. Even the park naturalist said the greatest number she had seen at one time before was (were?) three. Sorry the puzzle is a bit "jumbled" - I had to add shadows and rocks in the water to make it solvable. If you squint a bit, it will come into focus (I hope).

It's a very nice puzzle and fun to solve. You are very lucky to have seen these birds. I envy you.

I saw the birds clearly while I was solving it, so don't worry; you got it right. I thought I was looking at flamingoes, or similar looking birds (which the heron are) on a savannah, but the restrictions on color make the distinction between ground and water very unclear. It can't be helped. Overall, I liked your puzzle and your experience.

By the way, you question your grammar in your description. The verb of being in question modifies the singular noun "number". Therefore, "was" is appropriate.

It's a great image. I especially like the one in flight. Thx for answering my challenge Gaynor. I wish someone else would come up with a challenge. :)

Really a great illustration!! I have to admit that I thought they were dinosaurs at first, but with the story the image is very seeable. Great fun to solve. No guessing.
