I am very grateful for this site. It has been here in this form for 12 years, 9 of which I've been playing, and 7 of which I've been creating.

Jan's original puzzle:

We chose Jan 23 as founder's day because W is the 23rd letter of the alphabet.

very nice!

Very interesting puzzle. At the times of beginning Jan surely have known the original Japanese and European examples, because these type of puzzles were published there (in printing)...

Thanks, everyone. It seems I can't read a calendar. Tomorrow is our Founder's Day, so make some puzzles!

(When I posted the puzzle it was 2am today so the server must be on PST)

Thomas, Jan was always straightforward in acknowledging that he was making a website for playing and creating a puzzle that Valerie loved already.

RE: #6
Joe, it can be true, but there was a paper in 2002 with PBNs that contained human faces with two colours. Earlier this paper has the name Paint-It-Black and contained only monochrome puzzles. Originally published in Japan. I think Jan could see this paper...
The first PIB I've ever seen was in 1997 or 98.

Thanks Joe! Great tribute!

Great image on this tribute to Jan,Joe. This prompted me to check out some of Jan's earliest puzzles. Most are brilliant. What a talented man he was. :)

Fantastic puzzle, Joe. Nice shading. A wonderful way to honor Jan.

Absolutely loved this. It is stunning. I first found this site when there were just under 200 puzzles on it. I solved on and off as to when I had a computer that worked. When I didn't I would go to the library and print some to take home. It was a long time before I had the courage to comment and then even longer to try my hand at creating. But I discovered pbn puzzles early on and would haunt the book stores looking for new publications.

#15: Kristen Vognild (kristen) on Jan 24, 2017
Yes, this is rather more elaborate than Jan's first offering. ;)
