Afterward, at the buffet--it was such a lovely buffet with shrimp Creole and chicken tetrazzini and an assortment of little cakes-- Anyhow, that bald man from the hospital came over to me. "I I think we've met," he said, "why did you run away so fast at the hospital?" "My--my daughter." "Oh, yes. How is she?" "Better. Her hand ... broken...a rib." I pointed to my side. "I'm so sorry." He stood there a while nodding his head and swirling the ice in his drink before he moved on to someone he knew. "Ellie, I'm sorry. I would have introduced you but I don't remember his name. I don't think I would have remembered YOUR name!" After the day at the emergency room, I had visited Fran. She told me the bald man was a dear family friend and such a help to her. I had seen him drive up to the house several times during the months she was sick. Ricky came over to introduce his wife to Ellie and me--a lovely young woman. We all hugged each other. Fran's daughter, Flo, came over--more hugging. Way across the room was Fran's first husband and his new wife--pretty, but she'd never be as elegant as Fran.

Maybe "Fran's former husband" instead of "Fran's first husband"? Not your everyday homewrecker, that one.
