Puzzle Description:

"I don't believe this. I was walking in there this morning. Where was she?" Immediately I regretted opening my mouth. Even now the cops might be making plaster casts of my footprints. Fran didn't know the location of the body, but just then we saw Theo walking out of the woods with five cops. His shoulders were stooped and his hair in disarray. The cops, though, walked jauntily, their voices full of cheer. After years of answering noise complaints in our peaceful town, dealing with shoplifters and rabid squirrels, finally they had something interesting to work on. It was a party for them. They spoke to Theo again and made notes about cyanosis and lividity and his guess based on the woman's color that she had drowned in a puddle. As a doctor, he would know about that. As we watched the cop cars pull away, we grilled Theo. On his face was the pained smile of someone who has been through an ordeal. He had found the woman in the sewer clearing, face down in a pool of water. He had checked for life and noticed she was completely blue except for the purplish red of her face, signs that she had suffocated and died in that position. He said she had bags of food for the deer.

Aha, she was killed by the rabid squirrel's orphaned child, with help from the deer.
