Yes, it is the fable of Androcles.#8: Kurt Kowalczyk (bahabro) on Feb 5, 2013 [SPOILER]
It's funny - in Aesop's fables, the lions are alternately noble and tyrannical. In this case, he's noble. http://www.online-literature.com/aesop/aesops-fables/23/

good call, Al! At first, I just kept seeing an artist's palette...good job, Joe!#9: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Feb 5, 2013
Thanks, Kurt.#10: Kristen Vognild (Kristen) on Feb 6, 2013 [SPOILER]
Ditto #8. Probably because I paint. :)#11: marjorie rex (mamo) on Feb 6, 2013
I can see the paw now, and it's excellent
I have been trying to get into the site and haven't been able to. I still had this window open so I'm posting just to see what happens - and to see if I was right about the fable.#12: Tonia Bergh (tonia) on Feb 6, 2013
Joe, you're making me realize that I can recall the fables, but I've forgotten the stories and the morals of the stories...now I've got some research to do! And that cuts into my puzzle time...lol!#13: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Feb 7, 2013
Thanks, Kristen.#14: Teresa K (fasstar) on Feb 10, 2013 [SPOILER]
Sorry, marjorie, for both the 504s and the half-right wrong.
Tonia, when I started, I thought I'd remember lots, but I had to go look them up to find enough to try to find iconic scenes from.
I recently watched an old, old movie that had Androcles and the lion in it. But I can't remember the name of the movie. Oh well. I'll bet someone else will.#15: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Feb 10, 2013 [SPOILER]
Love the puzzle, Joe.
Thanks, Teresa. It could be "Androcles and the Lion" (1952) that gave it a christian bent. Since Aesop lived 620 BC, it was not his intention.#16: Teresa K (fasstar) on Feb 12, 2013
It could also be any of many others of the same name ranging from a short movie in 1912 to tv movies in 1938, 46, 51, or 67.
(I don't actually know all this - IMDB to the rescue!)
Of course, that was it. I enjoyed the cheesy humor, in spite of the historical inaccuracies.
