Totally off-topic--I've been having a LOT of trouble using this site for several weeks--slow saves, inability to return home, error 404, etc. Checking the CHAT forum I see there's been quite a lot of questions from many others. But when I do solve and save, then go to comments, it seems many of the regulars have commented. Are you guys having problems?

It's been really difficult. Its a bit better right now. But the guy who created it, Jan Wolter, had no idea it would attract so many users and the system just sort of clogged up. He offers this site free of charge with no ads so it is a wonderful gift from him. But he has a full time business to run and doesn't have a lot of time to devote to this site, but will when he is able.

My guess was Pearl Harbor. It's been working really good lately,does anyone know why? I thought maybe Jan did some work on it over the holidays so I thanked him in a forum comment as did Joel. Regardless,I'll take this opportunity to thank Jan for this site once again. THx Jan.:)

Yes, the site has not been as slow in the last week or so. When I can't get to the home page I use Find Puzzles instead. I always select Solutions: Unique and Solvability: Line and Color Logic Only to limit the choices. Then Sort by: Create Date - Newest First and it's like being on the home page. Or pick a single difficulty or quality rating, again for limits, click on Show: My Play Date, and Sort by: My Play Date - Oldest First to pull up your unsolved puzzles (your unsolved puzzles are all dated Jan 1, 1970).

Or, since most of us who comment are in North America, 3:00 a.m. is a good time to find the site less busy, lol.

I'd have to guess that the recent improvement in load times has more to do with casual users spending time traveling or entertaining over the holidays, rather than anything Jan has done. I plan to take full advantage of the speedier times while they last :D

That and maybe a lot of people got tired of the waiting and are spending their time elsewhere.

Old news, but since the comments about slowness above, I did a lot of redesign to improve performance, and then discovered that the hosting company had misconfigured things without my knowledge, placing the database server and the web server in two different datacenters (so communications between them were traveling over the general internet, not just on the high speed network connecting two computers in the same room). Fixing that solved nearly all the speed problems. I think at this point, after making the configuration non-stupid and after all the optimization I did to try to improve performance when the configuration was stupid, we are probably in good shape to keep things running fast even if usage does climb a lot more.

I know I speak for everyone when I say how much your efforts are appreciated. As you can tell this site means so much to us and we can't thank you enough for everything you have done. Thank you, thank you.
