Puzzle Description:

I don't. (Edvard Munch's "The Scream" dude.)

This has been my expression for most of this year.

Here's a tutorial if you're tearing your hair out: http://infrapinklizzard.deviantart.com/art/Logic-15892-260097155

My kids cause me to look like that painting sometimes, lol!
Um...I love this puzzle! I was looking like that picture for a little while there, then I went to your tutorial, I had gotten to the place where you need to do the deep edge logic with the 4 in row 24, did that, then every thing went smoothly from there, didn't need to look at the tutorial again.
Thanks for the tutorial and the puzzle Joe, was great fun :)

Cool puzzle Joe.

i tried to check how i solved it against the tutorial but the tutorial didnt work for me so here is what i did:

i started using edge logic on the 6 clue in r1 (which is completely placeable) followed by line logic
then two way logic on the last 2 clue in r6 (no matter where you place it [in c16 or c18] r7c18 is always black)
a little more line logic
then do the same thing right below it (no matter where you place the last 3 clue in r8 [c16 or c19] r9c19 is always black)
more line logic
then i went to the bottom of the puzzle and proved that there were dots in r25c14-16 (due to violating r23) and then using those 3 newly placed dots as another edge to once again prove that r24c14-16 were also dots
then it solved out with line logic
no guessing
very fun solve (nice image too)

Oh my gosh! The image jumped out at the very end.

The edge logic was really hard to find, but whenever I got stuck, I would just keep looking until I found something. Very enjoyable solve.

So, how come you don't relax, Joe? By choice or by circumstance?
#8: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Sep 25, 2011 [HINT] [SPOILER]
Everyone: thanks!

marz: thanks (again), I enjoy your puzzles. I make the tutorials in the (vain) hope that people will look at them before deciding that the puzzle "needs guessing". I'm always glad when someone finds them useful. --It's also fun in a obsessive-compulsive way. Thinking about it in an in-depth way also helps one to "see" the workings of a puzzle and make them better (sometimes).

bugaboo: nice use of two-way logic! Your row references for the first two-way are off, though. It should be in row6, proving that r8c18 is black.
The white-only edge logic on the bottom is nice, too.

Theresa: I have not had a chance to relax this whole year. It has been one thing after another, and currently our house has no heating system in it. Not "no furnace". No heating system. The ductwork was ripped out in anticipation of electric radiant heat panels being installed, but nothing has happened, and now it seems that we may have to go back to oil heat after all. -- After having gotten rid of all the paraphernalia and having paid (PAID!) to get rid of the 300 gallons of unused oil. AAARRGH!

That's awful, Joe. When your home is the source of your stress, that really has to be hard. I hope you found some relief in making this cool puzzle.
#10: bugaboo (bugaboo) on Sep 25, 2011
@ lizzard: you are both right (oops on me) and wrong (oops on you)

i did in fact mean r6 instead of r5 in the first instance of two way logic (i have now fixed that) but i was correct in saying that r"7"c18 is proven to be black (not r"8"c18 as you suggested that i should have meant)

(smile)

and thank you for the nice comments to me about the logic
#11: Gator (gator) on Sep 26, 2011 [HINT]
OK, this is how I solved it.

Row 1 edge logic to completely place the 6 clue. Lots more line logic.

I then looked at row 10 at the left. Both R10C3 and R10C5 cannot be black or else row 10 would be invalid. Both R10C3 and R10C5 cannot be dots or else row 6 would be invalid. So one and only one of R10C3 or R10C5 must be black. This makes R10C7 part of the 3 clue, so R10C8-R10C9 are black. More line logic.

I then used the two-way logic in rows 6 and 8 as described above. More line logic.

I then used edge logic on the 2 clue in row 25 to make R25C14-R25C16 dots.

I then used edge logic with either the 2 or 4 clue (doesn't matter which one) to make R24C14-R24C16 dots or row 23 would be invalid. Line logic to finish.

Looks like many ways to solve this one. :)

Doing this a second time, edge logic on row 1, edge logic on rows 25 and 24, then two-way on row 8 is what was necessary.

Found to be logically solvable by gator.
#13: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Sep 26, 2011 [HINT]
Thanks, gator; another "?" down!

Sorry, bugaboo, it's really r8 that you mean: http://postimage.org/image/208kh37d0/
R7c18 varies depending on r6 in c16 or 18.
#14: Gator (gator) on Sep 26, 2011 [HINT]
Joe - look at your picture more carefully.

If R6C16 is black, then R7C16 is a dot as R6C16 would be a 1 clue (and then R7C18 would be black to complete the 2 clue in row 7). If R6C18 is black, then R7C18 would have to be black. So in either case R7C18 is black.

i solved the same way as gator...on my second try. stupid red dots killed my first shot. nice challenge.
#16: Joe (infrapinklizzard) on Sep 26, 2011
Yup, you and bugaboo are right. Major derp on my part.
#17: Nancy Kay (joyfulnancy) on Sep 26, 2011
I solved without guessing but it took awhile. After reading all the comments I'm proud of myself :) Sorry about the high stress, hope it is resolved before it gets too cold outside!
