Puzzle Description:

Yuri Gagarin becomes the first human to travel into outer space, in Vostok 3KA-2 (Vostok 1).

Simple, with just color logic.

I like the look of this. It's a rocket with bellbottoms. http://images.google.com/images?q=Vostok+1

The phrasing of the description is deliberate. According to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, a spaceflight must include a landing *in the craft*. And while the re-entry capsule made it back in one piece, Yuri bailed out 4 mi. up.

I thought the first person into space was the American, Alan Shepherd, later a Moon visitor. However, he went up and down again. Gagarin was the first to complete an orbit.

nice... love the exhaust flames. I remember that, too sensei.

Gagarin was technically the first person in space who survived the landing... the Soviets had sent others up, but they hadn't survived the journey.

Shepard was the first American in space, but did not make his first journey until after Gagarin. Shepard's flight was May 5, 1961; Gagarin's was Apr 12 of that year.

April 12, 1961: Yuri Gagarin orbits the earth and parachutes from the landing craft.

May 5, 1961: Alan Shepard gets out of the atmosphere, but not high enough to orbit.

February 20, 1962: John Glenn becomes the first to complete a "spaceflight" by orbiting and landing in the craft.

I had never heard about anyone before Gagarin, so I did some looking and found that this is more in the realm of conspiracy theory than fact. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_cosmonauts

I spent most of the puzzle expecting it to be a birthday cake, so I was very surprised by what it turned out to be!

Sixty years ago now!
