The Buddha did not like to be venerated as a person, so he was reluctant to accept images of himself. In the very early art, the Buddha was represented in various symbols, including the Wheel of Dharma.

The eight-spoked Dharma Wheel (Sanskrit: "Dharmachakra:) symbolises the Buddha's turning the Wheel of Truth or Law.

The story is told that shortly after the Buddha achieved enlightenment, Brahma came down from heaven and requested the Buddha to teach by offering him a Dharmachakra. The Buddha is known as the Wheel-Turner: he who sets a new cycle of teachings in motion and in consequence changes the course of destiny.

The Dharmachakra has eight spokes, symbolising the Eight-fold Noble Path. The 3 swirling segments in centre represent the Buddha, Dharma (the teachings) and Sangha (the spiritual community).

Some wheels have a floral pattern. Others look like a ship's wheel. Many have the triple swirl at the center:

I hope you enjoyed my original design. Did you get tripped up when you realized it was not symmetrical? :-)
