Puzzle Description:

A close up of the Pieta, famous sculpture by Michelangelo Buonarroti, which resides in St. Peter's Basilica. Bob and Kate stand in awe before the tranquil beauty depicted in Mary's face. More about Michelangelo's pride in the comments.

Prior to sculpting the Pieta, Michelangelo was relatively unknown to the world as an artist. It took him two years to complete this work, which was commissioned for the Jubilee of 1500.

When it was unveiled, Michelangelo proudly stood by while people admired the beautiful Pieta. However, what was pride quickly turned into anger as he overheard a group of people attributing the work to other artists of his time. That anger caused Michelangelo to add one last thing to his sculpture. Going down the sash on the Virgin Mary, Michelangelo carved his name. He later regretted that his emotions got the best of him and vowed to never sign another one of his works again.

What can I say. He was only 24 at the time.

Ok, so first I saw an extremely creepy large-headed cycloptic child, then I saw a profile of a man smoking a pipe. Imagine my surprise when such a beautiful image popped out when I was done! Hah!

Michelangelo's Pieta humbles me beyond belief. What was ~I~ doing at age 24?

One of the most beautiful sculptures I've ever seen. He carved impossibly thin layers of marble into the folds of her dress.
