Geometrically, it is a curve generated by the locus of the point at which a variable tangent to a rectangular hyperbola intersects a perpendicular from the center to the tangent.
The numeral 8 is also a lemniscate.

My house is number 8, and we had a metal 8 on our house. One of the screws that hold it to the wall broke, and it slid down until our house was number infinity!
