I think that so many people have driven across Texas and thought "damn this is a big a state!"

Thank you, Bill. I'll still be laughing tomorrow.

According to some studies a whole lot of people don't even know where Chile is. Much less what it looks like. But Texas is up front in our faces for a lot of reasons. Rich in history (don't forget the Alamo), numerous books and films about Texas, great sports teams, border problems that are frequently in the limelight, and it gets hot. Just to name a few. Most of us have eaten and enjoyed Tejano Mexican food. Oh....and it's BiG.

PS I'm not from Texas. Just know people that are.

Many decades ago I read about a bar in Alaska that had a sign: "Happy Hour -- pitchers: $2. Texas size: $1.75."

Border to border at its widest, Texas is 860 miles. That is 60 miles longer that California at its longest.

Belita, I just looked it up. Alaska is 2.2 time the area of Texas!

unfortunately, most US school kids don't know that because of the way we make our maps. they also think Alaska is south of Texas.

...Right next to Hawaii.

Sigh...one of the best things I do for my Grands...I spontaneously state random (true/provable) facts about random subjects (lots of history/geography/science, but other interesting, thought provoking facts, as well)...and then we go to town about adding more knowledge to their store...lol...is this ever fun!

Try this one on a rainy day when the sun comes out: A rainbow will always be seen at an angle of 42 degrees directly opposite the light source.

good one! and in Texas they'll say theirs are bigger and brighter!

We use Texas instead of Chile for comparisons because we are measuring area of a region instead of length. For example, when you want to give a comparison for the size of a large body of water, you compare it to Lake Superior rather than the Mississippi River

Good point, Gene. I could still suggest that using the length of the Mississippi River comes in handy at times, e.g. the driving distance from Washington, DC to Mexico City is about the same as the length of the Mississippi River. :) (TIL...)
