-ing = gerund#17: Tom King (sgusa) on Jul 6, 2014
If the verb is used as a noun, I thought, but it has been more than 40 years since I took grammar... The example that I remember to this day is it is a gerund if it is used as, "I enjoy reading."#18: Kurt Kowalczyk (bahabro) on Jul 6, 2014
depends on usage... "I like writing music" = gerund#19: Tom King (sgusa) on Jul 6, 2014 [SPOILER]
"he's eating spaghetti" = verb
if it's "is" doing something, etc, becomes a participle. I'm not sure -ing anything is a pure verb. hard for me to remember it all(so you foreigners are screwed!), but any -ing usually is in noun form or has a helper verb

Swimming is fun = gerund (noun)#21: Tom King (sgusa) on Jul 6, 2014 [SPOILER]
I am swimming = present participle (added to the verb "to be")
I am at the swimming meet = present participle, also (adjective).
