Topic #150: Colorblind Headaches [ARCHIVED]

Enough with the red/green puzzles already!! Unless it's essential to the puzzle, like Christmas and some flags (and that's a theme that's been done to death), puzzles that are nothing but red and green, or that cluster lots of individual or small groups of alternating red and green cells, are extremely difficult for people with mild colorblindness, like me. (Large expanses aren't quite so bad.)

People with extreme colorblindness aren't going to be able to enjoy this site at all, but for people like me with some red/green difficulty, please stop designing puzzles that give us headaches. It's not too much to ask, is it?

Maybe I should do something to let people swap colors - substitute another color for green or something. Or maybe I could have some kind of thing that pops up when you hover the mouse over a clue or line saying in words what is there.

I think other people have problems with other colors. I sometimes have a hard time with blue and green. So some kind of helper might be better than avoiding all color combinations that are hard for some people.

But I'm not exactly sure what kind of helper would be most helpful.

Yeah, there are so many kinds of color blindness, I don't think you could just avoid trouble colors.

Maybe a "band-aid" solution would be to add a column next to the puzzle list that indicates the color used, like kbr woud mean black, blue red (k being black). So then people could just skip the puzzles with combos that give them trouble.

good idea Twillis. I personally don't have the color problem, but think that that'd be helpful to other users and probably the easiest solution.

I don't see why people with extreme colorblindness can't enjoy this site "at all." There are lots of B&W puzzles.
